 Coaching FAQs

What is coaching?

There is no one definition for coaching, although here are some of the definitions I like:

"Coaching is a process that enables learning and development to occur and thus performance to improve. To be a successful a coach requires a knowledge and understanding of process as well as the variety of styles, skills and techniques that are appropriate to the context in which the coaching takes place." - Eric Parsloe (author of The Manager as a Coach and Mentor)

"Coaching is unlocking a person's potential to maximise their own performance.  It is helping them to learn rather than teaching them." - Sir John Whitmore (author of Coaching for Performance)

"Coaching is an interactive process where the coach guides and facilitates the client's progress towards defined goals. These may concern relationships, career, self-confidence, financial matters or, a more general uneasy feeling that life has 'drifted off course'. Coaching is a one-to-one relationship between a client and their coach. Regular sessions are held either face-to-face or over the telephone with action taken by the client between each session." - The Coaching Academy

How is coaching different from therapy and counselling?

Coaching is not counselling or any type of therapy.  Whereas therapy and counselling focus on what has happened in your past, coaching is goal orientated.  It looks at where you are now and where you want to be in the future.

How can coaching help me?

Each and every one of us has the awareness that we can do or be what we want in life, but many of us lose this ability.  One day, we wake up and feel that there is more to life.  This is where coaching can help.

Coaching can benefit you by increasing your self awareness, allow you to set yourself clear but achievable goals, and increasing your confidence and belief in yourself.

What does a coach do?

A coach will facilitate the process to allow you to set goals and targets.  Using a range of tools and techniques, a coach can help you to work towards those goals.  A coach will help you to achieve your goals through asking challenging questions, truly listening to you, and providing you with the motivation to enable you to achieve your full potential.

Like having a plan for a new house or an itinerary for your holiday, you will develop your own life or career map to set and achieve amazing results.

How does it work?

You can choose to be coached either face-to-face or by telephone, which means that there are no geographical constraints.  To achieve your goals, a course of coaching sessions will help you to maximise your results and exceed your targets.  Everyone is unique and this will be discussed with you before you start a coaching programme.
